I. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Janet Laine.
City Clerk Teresa M. Smith called the roll.

II. Approval of Minutes. A motion for approval of the minutes of the April 28, 1998
meeting was offered by Ms. Demming, seconded by Ms. Simmons and
unanimously passed.
III. Chairman's Report: Ms. Laine requested input from members as to future
programs. A motion was offered by Ms. Simmons, seconded by Ms. Bloom and
unanimously passed requesting that staff incorporate "Jazz for Kids" in Founders
Day activities, if feasible.
A motion was offered by Mr. Gustin, seconded by Ms. Simmons and
unanimously passed that staff review the feasibility of providing a fall/winter
concert series.
A motion was offered by Mr. Gustin, seconded by Ms. Demming and
unanimously passed that staff contact Elaine Gordon to make a presentation at
the next meeting.
IV. Staff Report.
A. City Attorney Briefing: Deferred to next meeting.
B. Program Update: Mr. Sherman provided a Program Events Summary for
January - July 1998. In addition, members viewed a demo tape of the
Fabulons for consideration as a part of Founders Day activities.
V. Summery Meetinf:l Dates. A motion was offered by Ms. Baxter, seconded by
Mr. Gustin and unanimously passed that the June meeting be cancelled, the
next meeting be scheduled for July 2th at 1 :30 p.m. and thereafter regular
meetings to be held on the 4th Monday at 1 :30 p.m.
VI. Other Business. None.
VII. Adioumment. There being no further business to come before the Board, the
meeting adjourned at 5: 15 p.m.

Russians to
play church
in Broward
The Concert Association 'of Florida
will have an unusual venue for the
opening of its 1998-99 Broward County
season - First Baptist Church in
downtown Fort Lauderdale. A "White
Nights" festival, patterned after a
popular late-summer event in Russia,
will open Oct. 6 at the church with the
St. Petersburg Philharmonic
Orchestra, conducted by Yuri
Temirkanov. The mini~festmoves Oct.

kicking off the association's season in
that county. .
Originally, the orchestt.was to
have given two concerts at the
auditorium. The

Association's
Broward series was
not to have opened
, until Dec. 6 at the
usual venue, the
Broward Center,
with another
ensemble from the
same Russian city -
the St. Petersburg
Temlrk8Dov State Symphony.
. Once the
association decided to add a Fort
Lauderdale concert, the question was
where; a touring musicalls booked at
the Broward Center. .
The nearby First Baptist Church,
which can seat 3,400, became an
attractive option.
Joining the St. Petersburg
Philharmonic (formerly the Leningrad
Philharmonic), one of Russia's best
orchestras, will be celebrated
violinist Gidon Kremer. He wUl be the
soloist in Shostakovich's Violin
Concerto No, 2. Temerkanov, music
director-designate of the Baltimore
Symphony, will also conduct Liadov's
The Enchanted Lake and Prokoflev's
Symphony 1\;0, 7,
The Oct. 8 concert in Miami.Dade
will feature pianist Jonathan Gilad in
Schumanns Piano Concerto. the
program that also contains Georgy
Sviradov's Small Triptych and
Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony.
