ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT ARTS BRIEFS Russians to play church in Broward The Concert Association 'of Florida will have an unusual venue for the opening of its 1998-99 Broward County season - First Baptist Church in downtown Fort Lauderdale. A "White Nights" festival, patterned after a popular late-summer event in Russia, will open Oct. 6 at the church with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov. The mini~festmoves Oct. a to Miami.Dade County Auditorium, kicking off the association's season in that county. . Originally, the orchestt.was to have given two concerts at the auditorium. The Concert Association's Broward series was not to have opened , until Dec. 6 at the usual venue, the Broward Center, with another ensemble from the same Russian city - the St. Petersburg Temlrk8Dov State Symphony. . Once the association decided to add a Fort Lauderdale concert, the question was where; a touring musicalls booked at the Broward Center. . The nearby First Baptist Church, which can seat 3,400, became an attractive option. Joining the St. Petersburg Philharmonic (formerly the Leningrad Philharmonic), one of Russia's best orchestras, will be celebrated violinist Gidon Kremer. He wUl be the soloist in Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No, 2. Temerkanov, music director-designate of the Baltimore Symphony, will also conduct Liadov's The Enchanted Lake and Prokoflev's Symphony 1\;0, 7, The Oct. 8 concert in Miami.Dade will feature pianist Jonathan Gilad in Schumanns Piano Concerto. the program that also contains Georgy Sviradov's Small Triptych and Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony.
