" .- CITY OF AVENTURA RECREATION AND CULTURAL ARTS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MAY 17,1999 10:00 A.M. AVENTURA GOVERNMENT CENTER 2999 NE 1915T STREET SUITE 500 AVENTURA, FLORIDA I. Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Janet Laine. City Clerk Teresa M. Soroka called the roll. Members present: Don Gustin Irving Kanowitz Janet Laine Randi Rapp Lenore Toby Simmons Members absent: Elaine Baxter Mindy Blum Others present: Community Services Director Robert M. Sherman City Clerk Teresa M. Soroka Mayor Arthur I. Snyder Commissioner Ken Cohen A motion to excuse the absence of Ms. Baxter was offered by Mr. Gustin, seconded by Ms. Simmons and unanimously passed. Mr. Sherman advised the Board that Mindy Blum submitted her resignation from the Board due to illness in her family. Ms. Laine reminded members that 3 consecutive absences or 3 unexcused absences in six months may subject members to a vote of removal by remaining members. II. Approval of Minutes. A motion for approval of the minutes of the April 26, 1999 meeting was offered by Mr. Gustin, seconded by Mr. Kanowitz, and unanimously passed. III. Chairman's Report. None IV. Staff Report. A. SonQ Contest. Mr. Sherman noted receipt of 3 entries. Entries to be presented to Board at next meeting B. ProQram Update. Mr. Sherman advised Board that contracts had been entered into with a tennis pro for Founders Park and a sports production company re: softball league at Founders Park. Copies of fliers advertising this information distributed to Board. Calendars of proposed events through March 2000 distributed to members. A motion for approval was offered by Mr. Gustin, seconded by Mr. Kanowitz and unanimously passed. Entertainment for Founders Day discussed. Suggestions include a Swing Band and Klezman Band. V. MeetinQ Dates: Next meeting to be held on June 28, 1999 at 10:00 am. Consensus of Board members not to schedule a July meeting. August meeting set for August 23rd at 10 a.m. VI. Other Business: None. SOROKA CITY MANAGER To Whom It May Concern: The City of Aventura Government started providing services in June 1996. Since that time, the Community Services Department has offered a comprehensive recreation and cultural program consisting of special events, holiday celebrations, festivals, commemorative functions, and recreation programs geared toward the needs of the residents. Over 45,000 residents and visitors have participated in the programs and activities offered by the Community Services Department. The Recreation and Cultural Advisory Board, which consists of seven members appointed by the City Commission, is advised of and involved in the development of all activities. The Board offers their ideas and advice in the planning and evaluation process in order to provide the highest level of service possible to the residents. The Community Services Department strives to achieve the ideas, goals and visions of the City Commission by providing exciting and worthwhile programs that will attract new participants to their programs. It is with great pride that I recommend the Aventura Community Services Department be considered for the Agency Excellence Award.
