Dear Mayor and Commissioners,
As you requested, the Aventura Cultural Center Foundation has been
pursuing a Capital Development grant through the Miami-Dade Department of
Cultural Affairs and we would like to inform you of our progress in that direction
and other concerns related to a building for a performing arts center for Aventura.
As Chairperson, I visited the offices of the Department of Cultural Affairs in
late..December. I was accompanied by Foundation member Pauline Winick, a
former Chairman of the Cultural Affairs Board. We met with Deborah Margol,
Deputy Director and Kelly Allocco, Grants Program Administrator. The 2004-
2005 grant specifications had not yet been published. However, we were
promised the full assistance of the office in preparing the grant application and
were given assurance that a performing arts center in Aventura was consistent
with the overall concerns of their department. We were also promised planning
consultation by outstanding architects, such as Bernard Zyscovich, at no cost. At
their suggestion I also attended the first public information meeting for the Miami-
Dade capital program bond issue and requested that we be considered for
support for the building of a performing arts center as the area is under served.
In relation to a physical site and a building, we would like to congratulate you
on your purchase of 6 acres at Gulfstream to enhance the quality of life for
residents of Aventura. We have done our research and have learned that a
footprint for a quality 600 seat theater (the size recommended by the City's
consultants) would require 1 % acres. We respectfully request that that portion of
land at Gulfstream be set aside for that purpose.
The capital grant guidelines and application forms were distributed on
February 18.0ur Committee met on the 26th and our members would appreciate
the opportunity to meet with you individually or in workshop session in early
March to brief you on details. Thank you for your continuing support of our work.
