The meeting was called to order by Chairman Robert Diamond and City Manager Eric M. Soroka called the roll. Members present: Deborah Carr Ted Cohen Robert Diamond Patricia Frank Manuel Grife Julie Israel Marian Nesbitt Larry Orenstein Michael Stern Philiip Sturtz Madeline Zern Members absent: GingerGrossman Shirlee Levin Others present: City Manager Eric M. Soroka City Clerk Teresa M. Soroka, CMC (arrived at 4:20 p.m.) Community Services Director Robert M. Sherman Commissioner Ken Cohen Commissioner Harry Holzberg Approval of Minutes: After motion made by Mr. Cohen, seconded by Mr. Stern and unanimously passed, the minutes of the January 10, 2002 meeting were approved. Chairperson's Report: Mr. Diamond expressed his concern at the prohibitions placed on the Board by the Sunshine Law and his personal desire to have this legislation modified. Mr. Soroka noted that this law has been in effect for many years and would likely not be repealed and urged all Board members to ensure that they abide by it. Mr. Soroka discussed a recent article on development in the City published in the Miami Business Magazine and then provided a powerpoint presentation showing the proposed Town Center Concept, the zoning involved, recent demographics coming forth from the 2000 Census and addressed Board members questions. Mr. Sherman reviewed the organizational chart of the Community Services Department and provided a Recreation Program Overview, including development of programs, implementation and evaluation. IV. ProRramming Discussion: Each member expressed his/her interests in projects they would like to see implemented by the Community Services Advisory Board, including, but not limited to: competitive sports between condominiums, aerobic classes, Hoop Shoot, increased communication with condominium residents about City events/programs, programs for teens, senior education support programs, computer programs for seniors, youth support buddy programs with seniors, youth volunteer programs with local businesses, arts courses, art appreciation, etc., music, language and condo education courses, courses in ethnicity, boating safety, indoor swimming pool to offer water survival courses, water exercises, water team sports to encourage parent and children participation, museum of contemporary art, art exhibits, major work of art displayed as a donation in Government Center, sculpture in parks, lectures series, book clubs, dance, ballet, volunteer City orchestra, children's art appreciation and display. Many board members expressed concern that the Board should initially focus on programs for the proposed Community/Recreation Center and existing City parks and facilities. Staff to prepare agenda for discussion and prioritization at next meeting. The next meeting was announced as Thursday, February 14, 2002 at 9 a.m. IV. Adiournment.
