AVENTURA HAPPENINGS The City of Aventura Police Department added a marine patrol unit to ensure boater safety as well as provide security to City residents and businesses from a different viewpoint. The 25-foot silver and blue patrol boat was christened at the inaugural Aventura-Waterways Boat Parade, and it patrols the waterways and keeps a close watch on waterfront condominiums. The City's bicycle patrol will begin next week. The Country Club Drive Jogging Path has been renovated to improve safety. Lighting will be installed as part of the scheduled improvements for next year. The City will soon be installing six emergency call boxes along the path which will provide immediate access to the Police Department. These attractive stand-alone units will directly link a citizen to the Aventura Police Department through a one-button contact. Aventura residents have enjoyed discounted field trips to catch Broadway shows, cheer on the Marlins and dine in nice restaurants. The cost for each trip averages between $10 and $55, which includes transportation, with as many as 150 people attending each event. Past events have included trips to Metrozoo and Parrot Jungle and lunches at Boca Resort and the Chart House. Upcoming events include a tour of the Wolfsonian Museum on South Beach, Showboat at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and Marlins Opening Day at Pro Player Stadium. For more information on the events, call 466-8900. A transit study is underway, which provides the framework to begin bus service in the City to link the residential areas with the shopping centers. Public Hearings are scheduled for April 8 to gain citizen feedback on the citywide transit system. The first meeting will be held at 4:00 P.M. in Coronado's Recreation Hall and the second will be held at 7:00 P.M. in Commodore Plaza's Tower Building Auditorium. The Police Department has increased patrols along Biscayne Boulevard during the construction period and is working with Miami-Dade Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol to address traffic congestion at the major intersections on Biscayne Boulevard. Beautification improvements on Aventura Boulevard are underway, and the palm-lined street provides a warm welcome to those who visit and live in the City. For the third year, no property tax increase. The City Council adopted the 1995 County UMSA millage rate of 2.2270. This is the lowest tax rate in the County.
