September 30, 221 Don Soffer Aventura High School (DSAHS) Governing Board Meeting Minutes - -- DON SOFFER AVENTURA G $ HIr- N RH00111 DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNING BOARD REGULAR MEETING MINUTES SEPTEMBER 30, 2021 Following 10:00 a.m. ACES Governing Board Meeting Aventura Government Center 19200 West Country Club Drive Aventura, FL 33180 City Commission, Acting in its Capacity as the Governing Board for the Don Soffer Aventura High School (DSAHS): 1. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL: The meeting was called to order by Mayor Enid Weisman at 11 :12 a.m. The roll was called and the following were present: Mayor Enid Weisman, Vice Mayor Dr. Linda Marks', Commissioner Jonathan Evans, Commissioner Rachel S. Friedland, Commissioner Denise Landman, Commissioner Marc Narotsky2, Commissioner Robert Shelley, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, City Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath, and City Attorney Robert Meyers. Also present were DSAHS Principal Dr. Geoff McKee and Rachel Wind ler-Freitag, South Florida Deputy Director Charter Schools USA. As a quorum was determined to be present, the meeting commenced. 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Pledge was done at the preceding meeting. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion for approval of the July 22, 2021 regular meeting minutes and August 17, 2021 special meeting minutes was offered by Commissioner Shelley, seconded by Commissioner Evans, and passed unanimously, by roll call vote. 4. MOTION APPROVING THE 2021-2022 FLORIDA INSTRUCTIONAL CONTINUITY PLAN (ICP) FOR THE DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL: Mrs. Horvath read the following motion: MOTION APPROVING THE 2021-2022 FLORIDA INSTRUCTIONAL CONTINUITY PLAN (ICP) FOR THE DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL A motion for approval was offered by Commissioner Shelley and seconded by Commissioner Friedland. Principal Dr. McKee reviewed the Plan to address learning for students not on campus, in line with the Florida requirement for all schools. 1 Left the meeting during Item 6 public comments. 2 Participated via virtual communications media technology. MOTION APPROVING THE 2021-2022 OUT-OF-FIELD WAIVERS FOR THE DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL: Mrs. Horvath read the following motion: MOTION APPROVING THE 2021-2022 OUT-OF-FIELD WAIVERS FOR THE DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL A motion for approval was offered by Commissioner Friedland and seconded by Commissioner Shelley. Principal Dr. McKee reviewed the endorsements and the out-of-field waivers. The following motion was made by Commissioner Shelley and seconded by Vice Mayor Dr. Marks: MOTION APPROVING A $500 STIPEND FOR EACH TEACHER COMPLETING THEIR ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM WITHIN A 2-YEAR PERIOD EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 30, 2021, INCLUDING THOSE CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THEIR ENDORSEMENT PROGRAM. Mayor Weisman opened the item for public comment. There being no comments, the item was closed for public input. The motion passed unanimously, by roll call vote. MOTION APPROVING THE UPDATED DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL FAMILY HANDBOOK FOR 2021-2022: Mrs. Horvath read the following motion: MOTION APPROVING THE UPDATED DON SOFFER AVENTURA HIGH SCHOOL FAMILY HANDBOOK FOR 2021-2022 A motion for approval was offered by Commissioner Landman and seconded by Commissioner Evans. Principal Dr. McKee reviewed the summary of the Handbook. The Commission/Board discussed the fundraiser for dress down Fridays and voiced concern regarding singling those out who were financially unable to pay to participate. Mayor Weisman opened the item for public comment. The following members of the public provided comments: Sabina Potack (21124 N.E. 31st Place, Aventura), Harry Sudarsky (Aventura), Diane Gleit (3148 N.E. 212th Street, Aventura), Dana Nuchamovitz (3284 N.E. 211th Terrace, Aventura), and Kristin Wallin (3440 N.E. 192 Street, Aventura). There being no additional comments, the item was closed for public input. Mr. Meyers clarified that the Commission/Governing Board sets policy and internal issues should be addressed at the administrative level through the Principal, Ms. Wind ler-Freitag, or Charter Schools USA. 7. SCHOOL UPDATES — DSAHS PRINCIPAL DR. GEOFF MCKEE: Principal Dr. Geoff McKee provided an update on the following topics, which were then discussed: feedback from parents, communication with parents, addressing class tardiness, curriculum, lunch detention, class change time call outs, open house, volleyball, COVID- 19 updates (masking and vaccination), school spirit, clubs, personnel and teachers needed, teacher professional development, adding Rachel Wind ler-Freitag's name to the school website, and Principal's history. 8. OTHER BUSINESS: • DSAHS 2021-2022 Teacher Salary Increase Allocation Plana: Ms. Windler-Freitag reviewed the plan, as distributed by Mr. Wasson, including the total sum to be allocated for salaries for certified teachers. The Commission/Board discussed and provided agreement, without any opposition voiced for the plan. Ms. Windler-Freitag will come back with any adjustments for the plan. 9. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission as the Governing Board, a motion to adjourn was offered by Commissioner Shelley, seconded by Commissioner Evans, and unanimously approved; thus, adjourning the meeting at 12:58 p.m. Ellisa L.
