CITY COMMISSION LIAISON MEETING MINUTES
OCTOBER 29, 2021
9:30 A.M.
Aventura Government Center

A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held at the Aventura Government
Center on October 29, 2021 and called to order at 9:32 a.m. The following Commission
Liaison members were in attendance: Vice Mayor Dr. Linda Marks. Commissioner Robert
Shelley was absent. Also present were Mayor Enid Weisman, Commissioner Jonathan
Evans, Commissioner Rachel S. Friedland, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, and City
Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath.
The following items regarding the Aventura City of Excellence School were discussed:
mask policy, request for the County metrics that are being used regarding mask policy, a
targeted campaign at the school for the vaccination of children, request for an update on
the gifted program within five days with an update provided at every meeting', and update
provided on the possible expansion of the school with direction to start looking at an
amendment to the school's charter to increase to 1 ,000 students.
The following items regarding the Don Soffer Aventura High School were discussed:
request for the County metrics that are being used regarding mask policy, targeted
campaign at the school for the vaccination of children, arrangements for the first
graduation, whether or not teachers can be mandated to participate in the retirement
program offered, request for an update on an activities director, Aventura magazine
articles on top performing high schools and what DSAHS will have to provide for their
spot in the magazine, request for a television production lab to be provided within 30 days,
request for the status on Silver Knight coordinator as well as projects and titles, providing
the role of the counselors in the building, positive feedback on the food offered at the
cafeteria, review of the layout of the cafeteria and possible construction changes, Wi-Fi
available at the school, filling open positions, providing activities calendar for the year,
election of 9th grade student government president, report on three teachers hired, plans
for prom/dances, request for senior curriculum and any changes to the curriculum for 9th
to 11th grade, and restructuring the DSAHS Foundation.
