CITY COMMISSION LIAISON MEETING MINUTES
MAY 13, 2021

A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held at the Aventura Government
Center on May 13, 2021 and called to order at 11 .20 a.m. The following Commission
Liaison members were in attendance: Vice Mayor Dr. Linda Marks and Commissioner
Robert Shelley. Also present were Mayor Enid Weisman, Commissioner Jonathan
Evans', Commissioner Rachel S. Friedland2, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, City Clerk
Ellisa L. Horvath, Assistant City Manager — Finance and Administration Brian Raducci,
ACES Principal Dr. Anthony Tyrkala, DSAHS Principal Dr. Geoff McKee, and Charter
Schools USA representatives Dr. David Christiansen (Chief of Schools) and Rachel
Windler Freitag (South Florida Deputy Director).
Principal Dr. Anthony Tyrkala was congratulated on his recent doctorate.
Principal Dr. McKee was introduced as the new Principal for the Don Soffer Aventura
High School (DSAHS).
Dr. Christiansen reviewed a coordinated collaborative plan for an Aventura K-12
education system.
Commissioner Shelley requested that the focus be to address the issues (leadership,
communication, and college advising) at DSAHS, with any alignment to be secondary
since not all of the students at ACES would be attending DSAHS.
Principal Dr. McKee discussed his plans for the upcoming school year.
The issues raised at Principal Dr. McKee's "Coffee with the Principal" meetings were
discussed including communication, CAP advisor, and grading/technology.
All those in attendance agreed with the intent of the K-12 idea, but noted that the items
with the high school needed to be addressed first, including top staffing, technology, and
requesting Commission assistance for needed items.

Principal Dr. Tyrkala provided comments on the gifted program. Mentoring opportunities
for the principal were discussed.
No members of the public provided comments.
The meeting adjourned at 1.06 p.m.
