LIAISON MEETING MINUTES

9:00 a.m.
A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held on July 10, 2020 and called to
order at 9:00 a.m. The meeting was held via video conferencing through Zoom, as
specified on the meeting notice and as a result of the continued state of emergency due
to COVID-19. The following Commission Liaison members were in attendance:
Commissioner Dr. Linda Marks and Commissioner Robert Shelley'. Also present were
Mayor Enid Weisman, Vice Mayor Gladys Mezrahi, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson,
City Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath, ACES Principal Anthony Tyrkala, Charter Schools USA
Vice President of Education Rachel Windler-Freitag, and Charter Schools USA Attorney
Edward Pozzuoli.
Mr. Pozzuoli discussed the request for the re-opening policy for both the Aventura City
of Excellence School (ACES) and the Don Soffer Aventura High School (DSAHS), to be
presented for consideration by the Governing Boards for both schools. Charter Schools
USA will provide the policy to both school principals to personalize for their respective
schools.
The need to obtain survey results for both schools from parents regarding the last
trimester was discussed.
Principal Tyrkala provided an overview of the re-opening plan for ACES.
Principal Tyrkala and Ms. Windler-Freitag discussed the following items: addressing
regression, assessing students, COVID-19 preparation and safety guide, providing
comfort to teachers to return to school, providing procedures/protocols to be
implemented by parents, providing an update link on the website, enrollment, back-up
plan for remote learning, and adding the City Commission to the list for emails sent to
parents.
Ms. Windler-Freitag provided information on the DSAHS enrollment, while Principal
Tyrkala provided information on the ACES enrollment.
Mr. Wasson provided an update on the DSAHS locker rooms.
The following members of the public provided comments: Rachel S. Friedland, Marina
Kessler, and Diane Gleit. Jennifer Avidan requested to provide comments, but could not
due to issues with her technology.
The meeting adjourned at 11 :02 a.m.
