CITY COMMISSION LIAISON MEETING MINUTES
MARCH 24, 2021

Virtual Meeting Via Video Conferencing
The meeting was held via video conferencing through Zoom, as specified on the meeting
public notice, as a result of the continued COVID-19 state of emergency.
A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held on March 24, 2021 and called
to order at 1 :00 p.m. The following Commission Liaison members were in attendance:
Vice Mayor Robert Shelley and Commissioner Dr. Linda Marks. Also present were Mayor
Enid Weisman, Commissioner Jonathan Evans', City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, City
Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath, Don Soffer Aventura High School (DSAHS) Principal David
McKnight, Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) Principal Anthony Tyrkala, and
Charter Schools USA South Florida Area Director Rachel Windler-Freitag.
Principal Tyrkala provided an update, which included the following items discussed:
enrollment process, number of Aventura residents applied to be provided to Mr. Wasson
for distribution, upcoming meeting scheduled with teachers at DSAHS, new Britto artwork,
data for school accountability, available tutoring, notifying the School Governing Board
regarding school events, petition regarding uniforms and uniform company mainly due to
the change in store location, on-campus uniform sales held quarterly to address the
uniform location concerns, hiring process for next school year, and plans for graduation
in June.
Principal McKnight and Ms. Windler-Freitag provided updates, which included the
following items discussed: enrollment process, meetings with the parents and addressing
the issues raised including academic grading and college preparedness, posting for a full
time CAP advisor, fixing the system calculating GPA, reviewing the grading policy with
teachers, providing a notice to parents with contact information regarding any grading
issues, expectation for teachers, responding to parent concerns and issues, providing an
update to parents detailing what is being done to address concerns raised at the meetings
with Principal McKnight with a copy to the School Governing Board for informational
purposes, borrowed picnic tables from the City for outdoor seating and the order placed
for those as well as trash receptacles, changes to the CDC guidelines for seating in the
cafeteria, timing for lunch periods, hiring process for next school year including 11 th grade,
order placed for technology, and providing the curriculum for 11th grade to Mr. Wasson
for distribution.
