A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held on February 18, 2020 and
called to order at 9:00 a.m. The following Commission Liaison members were in
attendance: Commissioner Dr. Linda Marks. Commissioner Robert Shelley was absent.
Also present were Mayor Enid Weisman, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, City Clerk
Ellisa L. Horvath, Don Soffer Aventura High School Principal David McKnight, and
Charter Schools USA Vice President of Education Rachel Windler-Freitagl.
Mr. McKnight and Ms. Windler-Freitag reviewed the following: applications received
thus far and the upcoming lottery, teacher appreciation day, enrollment for 9th and 10th
grades, curriculum, job fair and teacher recruitment, providing competitive salaries and
the ability to request approval for salaries above the normal range, offer letters, Charter
Schools USA revamping the HR area to focus on teacher recruitment, the school's
upcoming needs and grants, upcoming budget, uniforms, and applying for the sports
league in March.
The following additional items were discussed: providing verbiage for Algebra with a
minimum 2.5 average as an eligibility requirement to attend the school in addition to
other criteria, determining if stipends can be private, the importance of recruiting top
teachers and providing offers of employment for firm agreements, the referendum
stipend, researching a blended learning experience using virtual technology, discussion
with John Hage, the FF&E Report, providing the school mission on the City's website,
and establishing a relationship with the Neighbors section to print articles on the school.
Ms. Windler-Freitag recommended that the Governing Board approve a new increased
compensation plan for doctorate degrees in the sciences.
Mr. McKnight will proceed with the science and social science applicants with offers of
employment listing a minimum salary, with additional stipends and bonus available. He
will also provide Mr. Wasson with the 10th grade curriculum to provide at the
Commission Workshop.
Mr. Wasson provided an update on the school zone, to be implemented soon. He will
provide information to the Commission on the April 25th wine and cheese fundraiser at
the school. Mr. Wasson discussed the DSAHS Foundation Board and reported on the
amount available in the fund. Mr. McKnight will work with the Board on the needs of the
school.
No members of the public provided comments.
