Aventura LIAISON MEETING MINUTES

A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held on February 19, 2019 and
called to order at 11:02 a.m. The following Commission Liaison members were in
attendance: Vice Mayor Dr. Linda Marks and Commissioner Robert Shelley. Also
present were Mayor Enid Weisman, City Consultant Eric M. Soroka, City Manager
Ronald J. Wasson, City Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath, Don Soffer Aventura High School
Principal David McKnight, and Charter Schools USA Vice President of Education
Rachel Windler-Freitag.
Mr. Soroka distributed and reviewed a PowerPoint presentation titled "Don Soffer
Aventura High School Update," which highlighted the following items: Interior Building
Photos, Exterior Building Photos, Construction Update for February and March, Security
Update, Transportation, and Proposed DSH School Advisory Board.
Mr. Soroka will provide information on the amount of students within the two-mile radius,
as well as the cost to provide transportation to those students, for the Commission's
consideration.
Mr. Soroka distributed and reviewed a proposed ordinance creating the Don Soffer
Aventura High School Advisory Board, which will be discussed at the Commission
Workshop on February 21, 2019.
Ms. Windler-Freitag and Mr. McKnight reviewed a PowerPoint presentation titled "Don
Soffer Aventura High School," which highlighted the following items: Our Promise,
Planning for Success — Talent Acquisition (Recruiting Strategy — Overview, Talent
Acquisition Process, Talent Acquisition Timeline, Instructional Positions, and
Instructional Teaching Positions), Planning for Success — Furniture Design including
DSAHS Furniture Overview (Tables, Desks & Chairs), DSAHS Furniture Overview
(Teacher Presence & Presentation/Writing Surface), DSAHS Color Palette (Vinyl Tile &
Wall Colors), and DSAHS Furniture Designs (Classroom Options, Collaborative Room
Configurations, and Cafeteria).
Mr. Soroka noted that the budgets for furniture and IT would probably be higher than
anticipated. The computer lab equipment was discussed, as well as possible outdoor
seating for the cafeteria.
The following members of the public provided comments: Steve Weisman (Aventura).
Mr. McKnight distributed and reviewed the Don Soffer Aventura High School Program of
Studies 2019-2020. The Cambridge and Advanced Placement programs were
discussed, as well as contacting universities regarding required courses for entrance
and possible partnerships. Additionally, the science curriculum to be provided will be
reviewed.

Following discussion, the curriculum from Florida schools American Heritage, Pine
Crest, and Ransom, as well as New Trier High School in Illinois, will be provided in a
comparative spreadsheet.
Vice Mayor Dr. Marks will provide an update at the Commission Workshop, for the
Commission to discuss the ordinance creating the School Advisory Board, as well as
transportation for those students within the two-mile radius.
The next Commission Liaison Meeting was scheduled for March 19, 2019 at 9:30 a.m.
The meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m.
