January 22, 2019 City Commission Liaison Meeting Minutes The City of CITY COMMISSION Aventura LIAISON MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 22, 2019 Aventura Government Center 9:00 a.m. 19200 W. Country Club Drive Aventura, Florida 33180 A City of Aventura Commission Liaison Meeting was held on January 22, 2019 and called to order at 9:09 a.m. The following Commission Liaison members were in attendance: Vice Mayor Dr. Linda Marks and Commissioner Robert Shelley. Also present were Mayor Enid Weisman, City Consultant Eric M. Soroka, City Manager Ronald J. Wasson, City Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath, and Don Soffer Aventura High School Principal David McKnight. Mr. Soroka reviewed a PowerPoint presentation titled "Don Soffer Aventura High School Update," which highlighted the following items: Construction Update, Change Order Update, Contingency Funding Sources, Security Update, Transportation Locations under 2 Miles, ACES Governance, ACES Organizational Structure, City's Responsibilities at ACES, DSAHS Governance, DSAHS Organizational Structure, Charter School Comparisons, Proposed DSH School Advisory Board, and Building Perspective. Mr. Soroka will provide the number of students within the 2 mile radius, in order for the Commission to make a decision on providing transportation to mitigate traffic. Mr. McKnight discussed the student interview process that was initiated, the procedures for the waiting list, curriculum, electives, enrichments, and hiring of teachers. He will provide a summary of the curriculum, etc. offered for 9th grade (to be posted on the school's web site), the proposed curriculum for the other grades, and review the suggestion for a college counselor. The following members of the public provided comments: Rachel Friedland. The differences in the Governance Structure for both Charter Schools was discussed as well as the formation of the DSAHS Advisory Board. Mr. Soroka will draft an ordinance document creating the DSAHS Advisory Board for discussion, provide a formal plan for an alternative classroom location should the school not be ready in August, and provide information on the furniture.
