7. __ FOR PROPOSED CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL IN AVENTURA

JUNE 7, 2017 — 7:15 P.M.
A Community Information Session was held by Charter Schools USA, in conjunction
with the City of Aventura, regarding a new Charter High School to serve students in the
City of Aventura. The session was held on June 7, 2017 in the Commission Chambers
at Aventura Government Center (19200 W. Country Club Drive, Aventura, FL) at 7:15
p.m.
The following members of the Commission were present: Mayor Enid Weisman, Vice
Mayor Howard Weinberg, Commissioner Denise Landman, Commissioner Dr. Linda
Marks, Commissioner Gladys Mezrahi, and Commissioner Robert Shelley. City
Manager Eric M. Soroka and City Clerk Ellisa L. Horvath were also present.
Mr. Soroka provided opening remarks and introduced the following in attendance: the
Aventura City Commission, Dr. Martin Karp — Miami-Dade County Public School Board,
and Richard Page, Chief Impact Officer for Charter Schools USA (CSUSA).
Mr. Soroka explained the purpose of the meeting as follows: School Location/Timeline,
Community Input: Mission and Vision, Educational Design, Seek Input on Offerings
(Survey), School Support Petition, and Q & A Session. He clarified that the admission
process would be discussed at the June 14, 2017 Commission meeting and reviewed
the school location and timeline.
Mr. Page introduced the Charter Schools USA team and reviewed the following items
along with Rachel Windler-Freitag: What to Expect at Aventura Charter High School,
Community Input: Mission Statement, Community Input: Vision, Educational Design,
and School Support Petition & Survey.
Mr. Soroka reviewed the finance plan for the estimated $12 million project cost with no
impact on the general fund budget and no increase in taxes based on the current
proposal, as well as the management process for the school.
Mr. Page, Ms. Windler-Freitag, and Mr. Soroka answered general questions from
members of the public in attendance.
Commissioner Weinberg provided comments on supporting the high school.
The session ended at 8:05 p.m.
