Aventura City of Excellence School 3333 NE 188" Street MINUTES Aventura, Florida 33180 • AVENTURA CITY OF EXCELLENCE SCHOOL SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING f, fM,E„ September 9, 2013 CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL: The meeting was called to order at 7:45 a.m. Present were members Julie Greenberg Shapiro, Rica Tickner, Marina Blachman, Aldo H. Mariotti and Anita Silber. Also present were City Manager Eric M. Soroka, Principal Julie Alm and Assistant Principal Leslie Lee. The following teachers also attended: John Cavegnero, Philip Lakofsky, Kristine Griffin, Andres Bechrakis, Thomas Dusch, Melissa Sammons, Stephanie Fernandez and Stacy Mogull 1. Call to OrderlRoll Call: Quorum was determined and the meeting commenced. 2. SELECTION OF CHAIRMAN & VICE CHAIRPERSON: First item on the agenda was the selection of this year's executive officers. Marina Blachman moved to appoint Julie Shapiro as SAC Chairman; Rica Tickner seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Julie Greenberg Shapiro moved to appoint Anita Silber as SAC Vice - Chairperson; Marina Blachman seconded the motion and it was unanimously approved. Installation of officers for 2013 -2014 was as follows: SAC Chairman, Julie Greenberg Shapiro SAC Vice - Chairperson: Anita Silber 3. EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING • Review School improvement Plan — Ms. Alm reviewed the plan, SIP goals and strategies for this year. Motion to approve SIP was made by Anita Silber and seconded by Rica Tickner. Motion was passed unanimously. 4. CITY MANAGER'S REPORT: Mr. Soroka reviewed the following matters: • Security Improvements Update. • School Fund Audit. • School Capacity is 996. 5. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION REPORT: The School Administration Report is attached. 6. OLD BUSINESS: None 7. Fund Raising Reports: Ms. Alm and the members of the Committee reported on upcoming events. 8. NEW BUSINESS (Open Forum for Parent's Discussion): The flowing matters were discussed: • Bike Helmet Awareness. 9. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Committee at this time, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 a.m. The next meeting is scheduled for November 4, 2013 @ 6:30 PM Approved by the Board on November 4, 2013 Administration's Report School Wide Assessments: • FAIR K -3r" • Benchmark testing 3rd — 8th • 4th — 8th grade writing assessment • STAR reading assessment 1St — 81h grade Supplemental Academic Programs: • Saturday School starts November 16th Professional Development • Web's Depth of knowledge • Common Core connections across disciplines Recent Events: • Each year, ACES takes time to appreciate the contributions Hispanic and Latino Americans have made to the U.S. During Hispanic Heritage month students learned about Hispanic culture including: different foods, dances, traditions and people. • Students in sixth through eighth grade were selected to participate in a Cyberally training to spread awareness about online bullying. The Anti - Defamation League provides an interactive program that allows students to explore what they can do to spot and stop online bullying. • Six elementary students were selected as winners of the Poetic Power Poetry Contest. Their work was published in a "Celebration of Poets 2013 edition." • ACES Winter chorus for 2 "d —5 th grade students has begun with 85 participants Fundraising: • Fall fundraiser $11,242.75 • Munchies family night $75.00 • Salsa Fiesta $136.00 • ACES book fair: "dinner under the stars" $ 3,430.15 and $261.00 from the Food Trucks. Field Trips 7th grade traveled to Sanibel Island October 3rd (overnight) explore gulf side habitats kayaked through mangrove tunnels shelling & water testing MS Dance & Drama went to AACC on October 30th • Performance by the New World Dance Studio • Q&A opportunity after the show MS TV Production class visited CBS studios October 31St • Learn behind the scenes operations of a television studio • Meet & greet the 12 o'clock news anchor- Elliott Rodriguez MS Biology students visited Fairchild Gardens November 1 St • Learn about biodiversity and explore the relationship between the living and non - living features of local ecosystems Charitable Events: • ACES families donated 672 boxes filled with supplies for children in underprivileged countries. This is the tenth year that ACES families have generously donated to the Samaritan's Purse Project. • Breast Cancer Awareness dress down generated $1,700.00 Athletics: • The ACES Eagles Flag Football team won the school's first ever IAL Conference Championship. The Eagles beat Donna Klein 32 -0 in the championship game. The Eagles finished the season with an 8 -3 record. • Lady Eagles Volleyball team finished their season with a 5-4 record. • Lady Eagles Basketball team started the season with a tough loss to an outstanding Sagemont squad. • Coach Schulze and the Boys Soccer team have been practicing hard and are eager to start the season. Their first game will be on Wednesday, November 6th against rival Hillel NMB at Founders Park.
