COMMUNITY SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by City Manager Eric M. Soroka.
City Clerk Teresa M. Soroka called the roll.

A motion to appoint Mr. Berger as interim chair was offered by Ms. Kaplan,
seconded by Ms. Landman and unanimously passed.
Public Comment: None.
III. Approval of Minutes: A motion to approve the minutes of the June 13, 2013
meeting was offered by Mrs. Kaplan, seconded by Ms. Landman and
unanimously passed.
IV. Community Garden Project: Mr. Soroka explained the process to implement
this project. Staff to print brochures for distribution to condominiums and City to
add to twitter. Consensus of Board members to have a booth at Founders Day
to solicit residents to serve on a committee to work with Board members to
encourage participation in this project.
Staff Updates: Community Services Department Director Robert M. Sherman
discussed the following: summer camp, Halloween Harvest, Founders Day,
Veterans Day, senior trips, bus ridership, movie nights (10116/13 — 3/1/14 -
4/2/14 and 5/3/14). A motion to accept the movie dates as presented was
offered by Ms. Aloni, seconded by Ms. Landman, and unanimously passed.
V. Farmer's Market: The Board then discussed the possibility of providing a
Farmer's Market in the City. Ms. Landman offered to research vendors and
develop a preliminary plan to present to the Board at the next meeting.
VI. New Business: The next meeting was scheduled for December 12, 2013 at
4:30 p.m.
VII. Adjournment: There being no further business to come before the Board, after
motion made, seconded and unanimously passed, the meeting was adjourned at
2:22 p.m.

Founders Day 2013 Focus Group Meeting held on Dec 11, 2013:
Ten residents were randomly sent written invitations and followed up with phone calls
to attend this meeting. Five residents attended the focus group meeting. The group was
responsive and answered all questions. The group consisted of three females and two
males, all Aventura residents.
1. Why did you attend Founders Day?
a. What activities did you enjoy the best?
b. What activities didn't interest you?
c. How long did you stay at Founders Day?
Responses:
They attended because it is a fun event for their children, good way to meet neighbors,
liked the fair type atmosphere, felt very safe in a great City. Good icebreaker to get to
know your neighbors and meet new people. Like the openness of the north side of
Founders Park. The location was convenient. The average length of stay was 3 hrs. 20
minutes.
2. Did you see any of the advertising for Founders Day?
a. Banners?
b. Marquees?
c. Website?
d. News releases?
e. Shuttle Buses?

Well- advertised, they look for the banners to go up and then they know Founders Day is
coming.
3. How many people attended with you?
a. Were they family members?

There was a consensual support for the Aventura marketing focus and were glad that
attendance wasn't limited to Aventura residents because it gave them the opportunity to
invite family and friends who were not residents, and be able to attend as one group.
They were happy with no giveaways when you entered the park, less to hold and keep
track of They enjoyed the community pride in Aventura that was present in the event.
The event gave them the opportunity to show off the City to their friends and family.
They liked the local vendors and food trucks. The favorite activity was the rock walls,
toddler area, putt putt golf and bungee jumps. They recommended that a time limit for
the bungee jumps usage be posted to help minimize the long lines.
4. Did you visit the food truck area?
a. Did you purchase any food?

c. Did you find the food appropriately priced?

Responses:
They enjoyed the food trucks, and the variety of products. Some trucks did not have
enough staff, and didn't like the wait. They thought the prices were "a little pricey" and
should have meals that include beverages for $5, like a "Founders Day Special ". They
would like to see a Food Truck Directory posted.
5. Did you enjoy the entertainment at the main stage?
a. Did you have a family member performing or involved in the
demonstrations?
b. Did you see any other of the main stage activities?

Responses.
They liked the talent show and community demonstrations portion of the program. They
also commented about how good the emcee of the event was. Two people had family
members in the performances, and two didn't visit the stage area at all. They liked the
rope jumpers. There was a recommendation that the City contact local dance
academies to perform as well. There was discussion about placing the stage in the
outfield facing SW so people could watch the stage while waiting in line. They did not
did not hear the sirens for the flash dancing, but they witnessed it and two participated
in it.
6. Was getting to Founders Day easy?
a. Did you use the courtesy parking lot shuttle buses?
b. Did you use the Aventura Express buses?
c. Did you know about the Founders Day Aventura Express buses?
Responses:
Some parked at the Aventura Mall because "they don't do patience in Aventura"
regarding using the parking shuttle. Others parked at Leohmann's Plaza, and others
walked to event. None used the parking lot shuttles. They did request additional police
assigned to crosswalks at West Country Club Drive and the Lehman Causeway and NE
29 Place and NE 190 Street.
7. Did you spend any time at the vendors or sponsors tents?
a. How long did you visit the tents?
b. Which tent interested you the most?
c. Did you visit all the vendor /sponsor tents?
Responses.
The group spent a lot of time at the vendor and sponsor tents and enjoyed the variety of
services and products. They would like to see more interactive educational activities for
their children. They enjoyed the Police Tent, Sponsor giveaways, Police Robot,
haircuts, and face painting. They did not know that ACES was there.
8. Was the overall layout of Founders Day easy to navigate?
a. What improvements would you suggest?
b. What area was difficult to get to?
Responses:
They liked using the north area of Founders Park, and suggested that the stage be re-
located to the outfield facing southwest so they could see the stage activities while
waiting in line.
9. What overall suggestions do you have to improve the overall Founders Day
experience?
Responses:
More activities such as three legged races, family games, soccer games, and activities
that they can do as a family or group. They liked the porters at the restrooms.
