Abuse at school

accused of sexually abusing
nine boys there.
HARTFORD - (AP) - The
founder of a school for poor
children in Haiti bas been
indicted on charges of sexually
abusing nine boys there. alleg-
edly threatening them with
expulsion or withholding bene-
fits iithey did not comply with
his demands.
U.S. Attorney Nora Dan.
nehy announced Thursday that
Douglas Perlitz, 39, founder of
the Proje<:t Pierre Toussaint
school in CapMHaitien, was
indicted by a federal grand jury
on numerous counts. Perlitz
founded the school and raised
money for its operation when
he lived in Connecticut. "This
defendant is alleged to have
used his position of power to
manipulate and sexually abuse
vulnerable boys for nearly a
decade," Dannehy said
Perlitz was arrested at his
home in Colorado on WednesM
day, a day after the grand jury
in Bridgeport, Conn., indicted
him. A U.s. magistrate ordered
him detained pending a hear~
ing Friday in federal court in
Denver.
The indictment lists seven
counts of traveling outside of
the United States with the
intent to engage in sexual con.
duct with minors and three
counts of engaging in sexual
conduct in foreign places with
minors.
Perlitz's lawyer, federal
Public Defender Matthew
Golla, did not immediately

day"
Authorities say Perlitz
enticed children into sex acts
by promising food,. shelter and
items including cash, cell
phones, electronics, shoes and
clothing. Prosecutors say PerM
litz would sometimes withhold
benefits or threaten to expel
the boys if they refused to have
sexual relations.
The indictment said Perlitz
received funding from a reli.
gious organization to found
Project Pierre Toussaint in
1997. The program initially
served mostly street children
as young as 6 and later
expanded to include a residenM
tial program for high schoolM
aged children. Children were
offered meals, sports, class-
room instruction and access to
running water for baths,
The indictment alleges that
minors were sleeping in Per.
litz's bedroom in a two.story
house known as "Bel Air,"
When others questioned PerM
litz about it, he tried to hide the
sexual abuse by saying it was
common in Haiti for children
and adults to sleep together,
the indictment alleges.

WASHINGTON - (AP)-
Astronomers have found the
coldest spot in our solar system
and it may be a little close for AP PIlOTO/WA
:~~~. It's on our moon, right WNAR DISCOVERY: Some of the coldest temperatures in the
NASA's new Lunar Recon- solar system were measured in the crater called Faustini.
naissance Orbiter is making the
first complete temperature map
of the moon. It found that at the Pluto is at least a
moon's south pole, it's colder
than far away Pluto. The area is degree warmer even

heat," said David Paige, a Uni.
versity of California, Los Ange-
les, scientist who is part of the
NASA team. "Right here in our
own backyard are definitely the
coldest things we've seen in real
measurements."
Temperatures there were
measured at 391 degrees below
zero. That's just 35 degrees
higher than the lowest tempera.
ture possible.
Pluto is at least a degree
warmer even though it is about
40 times farther from the sun.
The coldest temperatures on
the moon were usually in craters
that were within bigger craters,
hiding farther from the sun,
Paige said. Three craters where
the cold temperatures were
noted were Faustini. Shoemaker
and Haworth. And some of the
coldest places are so remote and
unexplored they don't even have
names yet, he said
Soon, the moon's south pole
will slightly warm up with the
change of seasons and the north
pole will get chillier, he said.
That ultra-cold temperature is
important because it can trap
volatile chemicals, such as water
and methane, said NASA probe
project scientist Richard Von.
dralt. Trapped volatiles would
give any future astronauts
resources to mine and could help
scientists understand more
about the origin of the early solar
system. he said.
Tbe moon probe, only a week
into its science mission, has also
found lots of indications of
hydrogen, which could indicate
trapped ice below the moon's
surface, Vondrak said.
While NASA has been to the
moon with astronauts and
explored it many times decades
ago, this is the first close.up look
in about a decade and is focusing
on the tantalizing south pole,
where there is the best chance
for hidden ice.
"It's unexplored," Paige said.
"Nobody's seen what it's like in
these areas before at this resoluM
tion."
And the closer, NASA's
instruments look at the craters,
the more nuanced they look.
"The moon is not just a bil~
liard ball with dimples," Paige
said. "It's got interesting cracks
and crevices."
